Getting Back to Basics in Volleyball Offensive Play Calls

I think we need to get back to the basics in our volleyball offensive play calling. It has gotten out of control and I think it has hurt our sport in that the sets have gotten subjective and the hitters are left to guess the height and tempo of their sets due to our inability as coaches to give specific feedback to our setters and hitters in terms of what is a good set and what isn’t.

On every club team, high school team and college team I’ve played for we’ve had different names for the sets. In high school the high outside ball was a 4. In club it was a 5. I can’t remember what it was at UCLA but I do remember it was called a HUVA at BYU because we called out our play calls in Finnish so that our opponents didn’t know what we were calling (until they figured it out the second or third time we called it that it was a 4).

How Do I Get My Volleyball Libero in Middle Back in All 6 Serve Receive Rotations?

Assuming that your volleyball Libero is your best ball control player, you should put your Libero in a position to contact as many balls as possible in serve receive and in defense. Not doing this would be like letting your middle blocker set in a few rotations because you didn’t want your setter running very far or you didn’t stack your serve receive so she could get into position to set the second contact or you put her in the serve receive formation as a passer and she was served to. It makes no sense, you’d want your setter setting every ball humanly possible because that is her skill and her job and the same goes for the Libero. For this very reason I get my Libero in the middle back in serve receive in all 6 rotations.

The two most important skills in the game of volleyball are ball control/ serve receive and serving. If you can control these two area’s in the match you are likely to win the match. Without a good pass then you can’t get a set or a good set and with out a set or a good set then you don’t get an attack or a good attack and without that it is difficult to score points. So, following this logic I try to ensure that my ball control is the best it can be and I put my Libero where the majority of the balls go and where she can get to the balls that don’t come right to her. It is easier for a Libero to get to any ball on the court if she is centrally located in the middle of the court. It would be very difficult for a Libero to pass a ball on the right side of her court when she is left back and visa versa. If the Libero is in the middle of the court then she is equal distance to all balls and therefore can get to more balls and do the job she is on the court for.

1 Person Ball Control Drills- Volleyball

It is harder for volleyball players to get some extra reps on their own than it is for most other sports because typically there needs to be 4+ people and the equipment is complex. You don’t see blacktop volleyball like you do with basketball. Though it is a lot more difficult to play without a few friends it is not impossible. Here are some ball control drills you can do by yourself when you have no one to play with.

Individual Ball Control Drills:

1 arm passing to yourself
1 arm passing against the wall
Tennis Ball Passing- 2 arms to yourself
Tennis Ball Passing- against the wall
Right arm only pass to self, Left arm pass to self, both arms pass to self. Repeat.
Same as above but now every contact must go off a wall.
Passing to yourself
Pass to yourself, set to self. Repeat.
Pass to yourself against the wall.
3 point passing to yourself (pass to yourself, turn 90 degrees and pass, turn 90 degrees).
180 degree passing to yourself.
Pass to yourself, set to self.
Pass to self, set to self, roll shot to self.
Shuffle step to the left, pass to self, shuffle step left, etc.
Shuffle step to the right, pass to self, etc.
Shuffle step forward, pass to self, etc.
Shuffle step backwards, pass to self, etc.
Pass to self, kick ball back to yourself using the top of your foot, repeat.
Overhand to self, kick ball back to yourself using the top of your foot, repeat.

Volleyball Blockers vs. Hitters Study

Volleyball Blockers vs. Hitters

It has been said that, “for every inch the blocker gets over the net, 20 sq/feet of court is lost to the hitter”. “Lost” meaning unavailable court for the hitter to attack to.
Here are the some actual figures based upon the Blockers height over the net and the distance from the net to the hitter.

The Volleyball Libero

Libero’s are as important to our game as setters are. Just as you want the setter to take every 2nd contact possible, the Libero should be contacting every 1st contact possible. Unless the Libero calls for help then the ball should be hers just like it is with the setter. It takes time to increase your Libero’s range she can cover but with shuffle steps or running your Libero should be able to cover the majority of the court on serve receive and defense. Other players on the court should know that if the Libero calls the ball they should get out of the way even if it is coming right for them. Libero’s dig and pass for a “living” let them do it. Hitters hit for a “living” let them focus on that. For example: I’ve flown on hundreds of planes, doesn’t mean I should be actually flying one. I have met with nutritionists and athletic trainers, sports psychologists and strength and conditioning coaches all my collegiate career. Doesn’t mean I could write up a decent diet or weight lifting schedule. Doesn’t mean I know how to check for a MCL/ACL tear or tape and ankle properly. I leave those things to the experts and worry about my own responsibilities and expertise’s. Simply put, let the Libero pass and dig as much as possible and let the hitters just worry about hitting as much as possible.

Creating Time within the Game of Volleyball

Everything in the game of volleyball happens very quickly. This is exactly why a players ability to create time within the game of volleyball becomes so important. Their ability to create more time in the game of volleyball will allow that player to have more time to make moves, to see more of what is going on, be proactive and make better decisions and executions with their contacts.

How does a player create time in the game of volleyball you as?

Volleyball Home Defense/ Middle-Middle Defense

There are many types of defenses out there in volleyball to choose from. I’ve played and coached just about every defense and I’ve come to be a firm believer of Home Defense and it is the only one I use. Some call is middle- middle defense as well. I have been using the Home Defense for 10 years and have used it with 16 and under club teams, 14 and under High Performance teams, I’ve used it at the DI level and the DIII level and I’ve used it against international teams and it works for all of them.

I came to Home Defense many years ago after we did a study at BYU when I was an assistant coach there. Since then I have continued to study it and seek my own information. I believe it is important to understand the reasons for every skill, technique and system that you use and I’ve done extensive research on Home Defense for the past 8 years. Here is what I’ve found and what I do to consistently have one of the strongest team defensive stats in the country each year and have Libero’s who are consistently in the top 10 in digs/set each year including 2 All America Libero’s and twice our Libero’s have been the NCAA DIII statistic champion in digs.

The first thing I did was to…….

Volleyball Armswing Mechanics

A study was done as to why a baseball pitcher could pitch 100-200 balls and then have rest for days taking minimal throws until his next rotation at the mound. Volleyball players on the other hand can take 200 swings each day, all week in practice and then play both matches in a weekend taking a hundred swings and repeat the next week for the duration of a season. Are volleyball players moving their arms with any less velocity or speed? The difference is that in baseball there is nothing to help slow the pitchers arm speed down and so a lot of throws will lead to pain and rotator cuff problems. In volleyball, even though the volleyball doesn’t weigh much, the impact with the volleyball is enough to help slow down the armswing and help prevent a lot of the should injuries from overuse. Throwing a ball to a partner isn’t the best way to warm up an arm as proven by baseball pitchers. Whenever possible, the athlete should hit the ball to their partner in warm ups. Even better, jump and hit the ball to their partner as this is the absolute least stressful to the shoulder.

There are 3 types of armswings that players can use to attack with. All 3 different armswings require the same thing up until the point of contact with the ball. Please make sure that your athlete’s are facing with their feet, hips and shoulders the setter side volleyball pole. This is essential (unless you have a left handed player then they would face the outside hitter pole). This allows both a right and left handed player to have their dominant hand furthest away from the net.
All 3 types of armswings have the same armswing mechanics, only the body position will change.
